Why did we name ourselves Mighty Velo?

We had stumbled into the bike industry 16 years ago with an inherited company name. So when it was time to properly rename ourselves with a new corporate identity that accurately reflects our core business in foldable bicycles, we decided on Mighty Velo!

First, for those who are old (or old enough to know this vintage superhero cartoon), – we were big fans of the popular 1960s vintage cartoon series “Mighty Mouse”. We also wanted to use the word “velo” as it referred to a wheel or a bicycle in French.

We put the two words “Mighty Velo” together to explain that while our bike wheels  may be smaller than full sized bike tyres, our smaller wheels are strong, sturdy and reliable. Mighty Velo or MV as we are fondly known to our customers and bike friends, is a Singaporean-owned SME with 15 team members and we want to continue to play a small but active role in providing car-lite solutions to drive Singapore towards a car-lite society.

We then put the two words “Mighty Velo” together to suggest that while our bicycle wheels and scooter wheels are small, they are strong, sturdy and reliable. Mighty Velo Brand Story

We stumbled into the foldable bike business by pure accident. We didn’t get to inherit a second-generation business like others may have in the bike industry.
We first began cycling 15 years ago because we were overweight, burnt out from corporate work and we badly need to exercise. The last time we had cycled before then, was at East Coast Park with our primary school classmates.
In 2006, we ordered two strange-looking foldable bikes and got them delivered via Fedex. We started to ride our Strida in parks and along pavements around
Serangoon, Hougang and Sengkang. We got accosted everywhere we cycled and even accosted during our meals at coffee shops and restaurants. After slowly realising months later that many people were interested in foldable bikes too, we decided to open Mighty Velo to specialise in foldable bikes.
We became the first two local foldable bike riders to engage the Transport Minister in a Land Transport Forum in 2006, showing the then Minister the problems we had faced while taking the train and bus with our bikes. After sending the Transport Minister a proposal to allow foldable bikes into public transport in Singapore, talks were initiated with the Ministry of Transport, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and transport stakeholders such as the SBS Transit and SMRT.
A six-month bike trial took effect in 2007 and in 2008, a permanent scheme of allowing foldable bikes into public transport during off peak hours kicked in.
Fast forward to 2020, the transport landscape has evolved so much that the scheme has been revised to allow foldable bikes and electric scooters and other
personal mobility devices onto public transport during operational hours provided they fulfill the LTA size requirements. This milestone became part of our company’s achievement when LTA conferred to us the prestigious inaugural Land Transport Award for Excellence, “Car-Lite Champion”.
Electric scooters are now banned from footpaths and roads and can only be ridden on cycling paths and park connectors. They also need to be UL2272-certified before they can be used in Singapore. Furthermore riders of UL2272-certified electric scooters will need to undergo a mandatory written test before being allowed to ride on cycling paths and park connectors. There will also be a mandatory inspection for all scooter owners who own a UL2272-certified, starting April 2020.
Our current stable of performance foldable bikes include Riese and Müller’s Birdy bikes manufactured by Pacific Cycles of Taiwan, the Reach GT designed and built by Pacific Cycles, the ultra chic and sleek commuter foldable bike, the IFMove, the most compact foldable bike called the CarryMe and the only adult foldable tricycle known as the CarryAll tricycle (with three wheels).
