About Us

Here at Mighty Velo, our dedicated technicians hand-build every single one of our Birdy bikes from scratch, using components from three distinct boxes per bike.

The Birdy bikes we sell may be designed in Germany and have their components manufactured in Taiwan, but they’re built from the ground up right here in Singapore.

OUR BRAND

Have you ever wondered why we named ourselves “Mighty Velo”?

It’s more than just a cute logo. Every name tells you something about the company that chose it: maybe where they’re from, what’s important to them, who they want to be, or who they want to appeal to. So what does “Mighty Velo” say about us?

We first entered the bike industry almost two decades ago, having inherited a different company name. When it was time to properly rename ourselves, we decided to define ourselves with an identity that accurately represents our core business in foldable bikes, and also the dynamic, creative, can-do spirit of our company.

First off, for the older ones among you (or fans of older cartoons), you might have heard of the popular 1960s superhero cartoon: Mighty Mouse.

Mighty Mouse is a small but bold hero who always punches above his weight. We also wanted to incorporate the word “velo”, which refers to a wheel or bicycle in French. Of course, it also calls to mind the English word “velocity”—speed combined with direction.

Put these ideas together, and you get “Mighty Velo”, representing how, while our bike tyres might be smaller than full-sized bike tyres, they’re as strong, sturdy and reliable as they come.

That same concept—big spirit in a compact package—is something we strive to embody, both through the bikes we sell and as a company.

Mighty Velo, or “MV” as our customers and friends fondly know us by, is a Singaporean-owned SME dedicated to playing a small but active role in providing car-lite solutions to drive Singapore towards a car-lite society.

OUR STORY

It may surprise many to learn that we stumbled into the foldable bike business by pure accident. Unlike others in the bike industry, we didn’t get to inherit a second-generation business—we’ve had to learn on the job from the start.

We first began cycling 15 years ago because we were overweight, burnt out from corporate work and badly needed exercise. The last time we had cycled before that was at East Coast Park with primary school classmates.

In 2006, we ordered two strange-looking foldable bikes that were delivered via Fedex. We started to ride these Strida bikes in parks and along pavements around Serangoon, Hougang, and Sengkang. We got accosted everywhere we cycled, even during meals at coffee shops and restaurants, by curious and intrigued passersby. Many who saw the folded Stridas even assumed they were a type of wheelchair!

After slowly realizing, months later, that many people were interested in foldable bikes too, we decided to open Mighty Velo to specialize in foldable bikes.

We became the first two local foldable bike riders to engage the Transport Minister in a Land Transport Forum in 2006, showing the then-Minister the problems we had faced while taking the train and bus with our bikes. After sending the Transport Minister a proposal to allow foldable bikes into public transport in Singapore, talks were initiated with the Ministry of Transport, the Land Transport  Authority (LTA) and transport stakeholders such as the SBS Transit and SMRT.

A six-month bike trial took effect in 2007, and in 2008 a permanent scheme of allowing foldable bikes into public transport during off-peak hours kicked in.

Fast forward to now. The transport landscape has evolved so much that the scheme has been revised, allowing foldable bikes and personal mobility devices onto public transport during operational hours, provided they fulfil the LTA size requirements.

This milestone was one of our company’s greatest achievements, and the LTA presented us with the prestigious inaugural Land Transport Award for Excellence, “Car-Lite Champion”.

Our current stable of performance foldable bikes include the Birdy, designed by Germany’s Riese and Müller and manufactured by Pacific Cycles of Taiwan; the Reach GT, designed and built by Pacific Cycles; the chic and sleek Iruka from Japan; and two other Pacific Cycles products: the CarryMe, the most compact foldable bike; and the only adult foldable tricycle, the CarryAll.

We continue to strive towards bringing our customers only the absolute best foldable bikes that the industry has to offer.
