Introduction
Hi, I am Grace, a Year 3 student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, studying Media Post Production. I have been interning at Mighty Velo as a Video Content Intern for 4 months. Read along as I share my experiences so far!
Back in school, I was exposed to big productions and projects, and while they were exciting, I always felt there was something else I wanted to explore in media. I wanted to find a path that was more dynamic and hands-on. That's when I decided to take a leap of faith and apply to Mighty Velo. Although I wasn't particularly familiar with bikes (or cycling, for that matter), I knew this was the right opportunity for me. Looking back now, I can honestly say that I’ve never regretted my decision. The experience has been a journey of growth, learning, and a whole lot of unexpected fun.
My Role as a Video Content Intern
My role primarily as a Video Content Intern here at Mighty Velo revolved around creating content for the various promotions we have. One of the best parts of my internship was being involved in different aspects of the content creation process. I got to brainstorm video concepts, film and edit the footage, and even acted in several reels! Whether it was creating engaging Instagram reels, filming TikTok videos, or working on promotional campaigns for the year-end sales, I had the opportunity to bring my ideas to life.
I was fortunate to join Mighty Velo at a later part of the year, which meant I got to be part of some big events and promotions. There were several large-scale occasions that kept me busy and allowed me to dive deep into the world of marketing and content creation. Events like Lazada’s 11.11 and 12.12 sales, the Year-End Sale, and the Christmas promotions gave me plenty of opportunities to create a wide variety of content.
High Stakes and Party Hats
One of my most memorable experiences was the 11.11 Lazada sale. As we all know, 11.11 is the biggest sale of the year, so the stakes are high. Though it was a stressful period, I still had tons of fun, and it was truly an eye-opening experience. We did live shows every night leading up to the event and even came back on a Sunday evening to do the live show on the actual day of the sale.
Despite having to spend my Sunday evening at work, I genuinely enjoyed the entire evening. Our customers were able to grab our bikes at heavily discounted prices, and 8 PM sharp was when the real action began, so we had to build up the hype. Together with Maggie, our extremely talented videographer and editor (and my work bestie), we were behind the camera, hyping up the hosts and keeping the energy high. When it was 8 PM, the hosts had to wear these extremely tight, party hats that could snap at any moment (it was hilarious).
Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone
Being an intern here at Mighty Velo, you quickly realize that your job title is just that—a title. While I came in as a Video Content Intern, I found myself stepping into roles and taking on tasks far beyond my original scope. It’s not a bad thing, though; in fact, it’s one of the best parts of the internship. The variety of experiences keeps you on your toes and pushes you to grow in ways you never expected.
One standout example was designing the banner for the Lazada 1.1 event. It was my first time creating a banner for such a large-scale event, and the experience was both challenging and rewarding. The banner had to be eye-catching and align with Mighty Velo’s branding while also fitting Lazada’s theme for the event. Since young, I knew I wasn’t very artistically inclined, so even in school, I tried to avoid anything that involved drawing or graphic design. However, this project pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to confront one of my biggest insecurities.
I spent hours experimenting with layouts, colours, and typography, trying to strike the perfect balance between creativity and clarity. Thankfully, I was fortunate enough to have supportive colleagues around me. Whenever I felt stuck, I would have a little chit-chat with them, and those casual conversations would often spark new ideas or give me a fresh perspective. Their encouragement and feedback made all the difference, turning what initially felt like a daunting task into a fulfilling creative process. When the final design was complete and went live, it was a proud moment for me. Not only did I step outside of my comfort zone, but I also learned to appreciate the value of collaboration and how it can elevate even the most intimidating challenges.
How I Brought CNY to Life on Instagram
One of the most challenging projects I worked on during my internship was the series of Chinese New Year (CNY) Instagram posts. Initially, I was only tasked with creating a single CNY post and some stories. However, it was suggested that I take on a more ambitious project—designing a 9-post Instagram grid that would form one large cohesive image. Though I was slightly hesitant at first, I decided to give it a shot.
I began by planning out what I wanted my work to convey. Since the theme was CNY, I wanted to create something that represented the days leading up to the celebration in a way that felt relatable to a typical Singaporean family. To be honest, I drew inspiration from what I love the most—steamboat, pineapple tarts, playing games with friends and family, and, of course, my two cats! What I truly appreciate about interning at Mighty Velo is the freedom we get to incorporate elements of ourselves into our work. It makes the creative process so much more meaningful.
This project turned out to be the most stressful and tiring one throughout my four months here at Mighty Velo. With a tight deadline, things got even more difficult when I started feeling sick in the middle of the process. I spent days planning and many sleepless nights working on the designs. Despite the challenges, I’m incredibly grateful not just to my family for their support, but also to everyone at Mighty Velo. The feedback, ideas, and encouragement I received were invaluable. I definitely couldn’t have done it without the amazing people around me.
Conclusion
As my time at Mighty Velo comes to an end, I can't help but feel so grateful for everything I’ve experienced and learned. This internship has been such a fun ride, giving me the chance to dive into the media and e-commerce world with a fresh perspective, get hands-on with content creation, and challenge myself in ways I didn’t expect. Mighty Velo isn’t just a workplace—it’s more like a creative family where growth, collaboration, and fun are at the heart of everything we do.
If you're thinking about an internship in media or content creation, especially if you want a place that pushes you to think outside the box and helps you grow, I definitely recommend it. Mighty Velo gave me the space to develop new skills, explore my creative side, and be part of a team that truly supports each other. It’s been so much more than just an internship—it’s been an adventure I’ll always cherish.
