Riding Off into the Sunset: An Internship Blog

Hi guys, it's Mitchell, fresh from my internship here at Mighty Velo. Coming from Ngee Ann Polytechnics School of Film And Media Studies, pursuing a diploma in Mass Communication. I seized this internship opportunity over others for a variety of reasons, mainly because I myself ride bicycles. In fact I have a Cruiser Bike at home, IYKYK. So the difference between that and a folding bike was huge and really interesting. Being a sporty person myself, actively training in both Athletics and Karate, choosing an internship that is similar was a no brainer.

Free Like A Bird(y)

I'm leaving Mighty Velo with tons of memories and learning points coming along with me. As you can see from the heading I was given freedom to create whatever content I wanted (within reason of course). This was great because I could showcase all my creative desires and try creating many different types of content, experimenting as I did so. From skits with witty writing, bike how-to’s, and even Sale Launch day reveals. This wide variety of content let me try many different filming and editing styles making me more well rounded holistically, not pigeon holding myself into one aspect.

Besides being my own director, producer and editor and other stuff, I also assisted my fellow intern Grace and the other full timers with whatever filming needs they required. Be it as an actor, camera man, additional hands on set and everything in between. It's always fun to step out of the office to go on shoots, heading to the studio just downstairs, creating dynamic backdrops and shots or going to Bidadari Park and even all the way to the Chinese Gardens all the way in Jurong.

Before I get too carried away, let's touch base for a bit or should I say touch desk. The office is an aspiring videographer's playground, with too many cameras, lights and all kinds of equipment to play with. I can't count how many times I've been flabbergasted by the new equipment I keep finding. This makes content creation even more fun, thinking how I could utilize the Insta 360, or the DJI action cam. I also had free reign on the software I could use and so I took the step out of my comfort zone to use DaVinci Resolve, a different kind of editing software outside of the Adobe suite, as well as Capcut. Fair to say I believe(/hope) that I am well versed in them. Thankfully, if I did have any roadblocks,my experienced coworkers were able to assist me using their wealth of knowledge and experience, patiently guiding me through all my dumb queries. Speaking of coworkers … … …

Culture

Initially I was afraid that I would not fit in or be excluded because I was an intern. But thankfully my fears were pushed away once I settled in and got to know my colleagues. Everyone was welcoming and gracious. It never really felt like I was an intern and was treated almost full timer, participating in meetings, not being treated as a grunt or someone below the full-timers. It was a great experience opening my eyes into what it's like to be working with a tight knit team. I never at one moment felt like an outsider. In fact I was given the opportunity to teach them some things which I learnt and picked up to optimize the live streaming process.

A Day in the Live

One of the biggest highlights of this intern experience was learning and understanding how live streams work, from the ins and outs of OBS to the maze of tangled cables attached to who knows what (please don't scold me, I actually know). It was a really fun experience as I had never touched this kind of thing. Figuring out what relates to what and how everything works in harmony was really enjoyable. I was also tasked with figuring out how to schedule prerecorded live shows. I had to search for many different methods and solutions, in the end settling on using macros which was another challenge on how they work and how to utilise them effectively. Finally figuring out how to use them to achieve my desired result was a huge sigh of relief.

Yearly Craziness

The end of year whirlwind and chaos that is 11.11, 12.12, Black Friday and many other sales and discounts during that period. Dealing and adapting to all the frequent changes that arose with the deals, liveshows and others. Churning out content ASAP to keep in trend and follow what happened on a daily and sometimes even hourly basis. This exposure to a high pressure high stakes environment was a delight and I'm really grateful for this experience that Mighty Velo offered through my internship period.

Retold experiences

Last but not least was my customer service experience at the retail store. Before coming here I had little customer service experience, so working some days in the retail store has let me add the skills to my repertoire. What skills you may ask? Well the highlights would be understanding how to empathize with customers and understanding their needs, as well as how to sell the various bikes and accessories.

Crashes

Of course not everything was fine and dandy. For every up there is a down. It's natural, what changes is how you overcome it. What I struggled with the most would be being overwhelmed with the workload which in turn would cause me to lose motivation. Especially because I was used to the polytechnic system. But over my 16 weeks I gradually adapted to this change in processes and lifestyle, settling into a new rhythm that worked for me most effectively. Unfortunately my design skills are still lacking but you know what, I'll keep working on it, enjoying the process in the meantime.

Riding Off

As my internship at Mighty Velo comes to a close, I'm leaving with many lessons learnt and skills gained. From coming in with doubts and fear clouding my mind, to leaving with tremendous growth, and fresh perspectives, my internship here has taught me so much about production and marketing, equipping me with tons of new knowledge I picked up from my fellow coworkers. If you asked me, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
